FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
CONFIDENTIALITY
We adhere to the code of ethics of the professional bodies we are members of, United Kingdom Council of Psychotherapy (UKCP), National Counselling Society (NCS) and The Welsh Psychotherapy Partnership (WPP). On initial contact we will discuss with you the importance of confidentiality in psychotherapy and counselling and which exceptional circumstances we would seek to break it – following a discussion and preferably agreement with a client.

Why do you need my GP details?
This is for the safety of the client.
SESSIONS
A session is 50 minutes once a week.
Your initial appointment gives an opportunity to explore what brings you to therapy and discuss going forward how to assess your needs.

It is not easy to predict how long anyone may need to attend for psychotherapy sessions but regular reviews will clarify matters as much as possible. If you have been in therapy long-term, eventually sessions can be reduced to fortnightly with the intent of ending.

I only want one session, can I do this?
First sessions are generally part of an overall assessment. You may feel better disclosing issues in the initial session but you will unlikely see lasting benefits and eventually return full circle to wanting therapy again.
FEES
Prices vary per therapist. There are limited low cost spaces available.
Payments
You can pay by cash at the beginning of each session or by bank transfer before the session.
Missed appointments and Cancellations
All missed appointments and appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice are payable at the usual fee.
Why do I have to pay for missed/cancelled therapy sessions?
In order to reserve a certain time slot just for you each week there will be a cancellation policy that applies.
AVAILABILITY
Monday to Friday between 9am and 8pm.
Weekends between 9am and 6pm.
Where
We are situated within walking distance of Cardiff Central train station on a busy main road into the city with access to many bus routes. Alternatively, Sophia Gardens is directly opposite the building and its car park is under a few minutes' walk. (Car par link)
The building has a welcoming reception area and you will find us on the 3rd floor. There is a lift for individuals with mobility issues or anyone who doesn’t wish to use the stairs.
Our address is Temple Court, 13a Cathedral Road, Cardiff, CF11 9HA
Are you available in a crisis?
Unfortunately, we are only available to you at your scheduled appointment time only. In the case of an emergency you will need to seek other resources. Contact your GP, the Samaritans (call 116 123, www.samaritans.org), or, if necessary, emergency services. We can discuss crisis plans in sessions to help with this.
INSURANCE
To work in private practice all psychotherapists are insured with indemnity insurance. You can ask to see proof of this.
SUPERVISION
As part of our ethos and ethics we are committed to attending regular supervision with UKCP registered supervisors.
ACCREDITED REGISTER
An accredited register that has been accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
This means that the organisation which holds the register meets demanding standards set by the Authority in a number of areas, including protecting the public, complaints handling, governance, setting standards for registrants, education and training, and managing the register. A voluntary register differs from statutory registers held by bodies like the General Medical Council because professionals are not obliged to be registered in order to practise.

The Professional Standards Authority protects the public and help ensure their health and wellbeing. They assess organisations that register health and social care practitioners who are not regulated by law so that individuals can choose a practitioner to meet their needs with confidence.

Why should I use a practitioner on an Accredited Register?
It provides you with assurance that the organisation holding the register meets our standards. This means that they manage their register well and require practitioners on their register to meet specific standards of personal behaviour, technical competence and, where relevant, business practice.
Accredited Registers provide you with greater reassurance because if a practitioner is removed from one accredited register for poor practice, they cannot automatically join another. This way, you can avoid practitioners that have been ‘struck off’. (www.professionalstandards.org.uk)

The National Counselling Society is a not for profit professional organisation whose purpose is to ensure that all of our registrants are safe, competent and ethical practitioners. http://www.nationalcounsellingsociety.org/

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a membership organisation and registered charity holding national registers for psychotherapists, psychotherapists qualified to work with children and young people and psychotherapeutic counsellors. As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.
DIVERSITY
We believe in the equality of all people and each individual human right. We are committed to working with those in need in an ethical way and are passionate about practising in a way that is anti-oppressive.
